  • I needed to use the buttermilk from making butter...

Submitted by El Jefe on 7. August 2018 - 18:19.

I needed to use the buttermilk from making butter in the thermomix and this cake was perfect.
I added orange peel with raw sugar and made it into caster sugar. I also added 1/2 teaspoon of ground cardamom.
I used a 20 cm springform pan and it took 50 minutes on fan bake to cook.
I didn’t make the icing (it does sound like a generous amount of icing) I used an orange icing glaze instead.
I will make it again it was easy and had a silky smooth texture.
*Also I used 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder and 1/4 teaspoon of bicarbonate soda. The ingredient list isn’t clear so I referred to the original Nigella Lawson recipe.
Thank you for converting the recipe to thermomix.

    Submitted by JeffnJulie on 9. April 2017 - 14:15.

My husband wanted a butter cake for his birthday party so I used this recipe and it was a hit. Nice and moist and good texture and taste. It took a bit longer than 40 minutes to bake through. I didn't make the butter icing as we had other icing options. Thank you for the recipe.

  • Not sure where I went wrong,

Not sure where I went wrong, but didn't like the icing at all

I followed the recipe exactly as it is listed, however the icing came out gritty, and as for making the 700g amount! I was left with a huge amount of icing left over as I only iced the top of the cake ---  obviously my error in not realising it was meant to iced all the way around.

The cake itself was ok but I have found nicer recipes here in the community so was disappointed

I made this cake (not the icing) for my daughter's birthday. I decided to give spelt flour a try instead of normal flour. The cake was lovely and moist and I received many wonderful comments. Thanks for sharing. Cooking 1

  • Fantastic birthday cake

    Submitted by EJJ on 5. July 2015 - 22:07.

Fantastic birthday cake recipe. Classic vanilla butter cake, great density. Held together perfectly for eating with little fingers. Whole cake disappeared. Butter icing recipe not so great. Need to mill that much sugar much longer than recipe allows. make sure is the texture of icing sugar or icing will be gritty. I hadn't milled sugar before and had to throw out the whole mix. Also too much icing for cake this size. I ended up using butter icing recipe for cupcakes also on the website and it worked beautifully.

Great cake. Thanks for the recipe. I swapped plain flour for gluten free plain flour and it has worked perfectly each time (I have made it three times in last two weeks).

  • Thanks for posting this

    Submitted by SS on 17. November 2014 - 17:07.

Thanks for posting this recipe, we enjoyed the cake.  It baked all the way through, had a lovely delicate flavour, was moist and was a great density for fondant cake decorating.

I will try a few minutes less in my oven next time...a little brown on the outside.

    thanks!

Sorry to sound so ignorant but please could you tell me what........ 1&am;1/2 teaspoons baking powder means. I haven't come across this before and I'm a new owner of a Thermomix.

    Thank you
