Recipe's preparation

  1. To "peel" the tomatoes:

Score the base of each tomato with a cross.

Place the tomatoes in a large bowl and cover with boiling water, and leave for 5 minutes.

Skins should easily peel away from the cross at the base. Chop the peeled tomatoes into quarters.

  2. Place red onion and apple into bowl and chop for 5 seconds, Speed 6. Set aside.

  3. Place tomatoes in bowl, chop for 5 seconds, Speed 5.

  4. Add all other ingredients, including the apple and onion, and mix for 3 seconds, Reverse, Speed 4.

  5. Remove MC and place basket on top to prevent splashes.

Cook for 60 minutes, 100 degrees, Reverse, Speed 1-2.

  6. Increase temperature to Varoma, and cook for another 20 minutes, Reverse, Speed 1-2.

  7. Test the consistency of the chutney by spooning a tablespoon of it onto a dish, then place it in the fridge for 5 minutes. If it's still too runny, keep cooking at Varoma for 5-10 minutes and check again.

  8. Place into sterilsed jars.

Delicious! I used cherry toms and didn'y bother peeling them.
Also, used a couple of whole fresh cjillies rather than cayenne. Halved the sugar, too.
Thick and spicy and amazing, looking forward to slathering it on some fresh bread with triple brie!

    Submitted by melskee on 17. April 2022 - 21:51.

Made this for about the 4th time today - first time in about 12 months. Forgot that it's quite spicy (for a family member who has a very low heat tolerance - I personally think it's perfect). I agree that it's a bit much sugar, I add roughly 160-170g. And need to remember to cut the cayenne back a smidge next time. I just LOVE this recipe though, had it with tasty cheese on crackers this afternoon. YUM!

Submitted by Jenny Hobson on 6. August 2021 - 20:38.

I love this recipe, but reduce sugar to 200-250gms. I also add 1 tsp yellow mustard seeds and many more cloves! I cook a few batches every Christmas for presents and it is always sought after. I use 1 tsp Masterfoods chilli in jar instead of cayenne pepper because I don't like it too spicy.
I peel the tomatoes but never cook them 5 mins. I have 2 forks and peel them in rotation. By the time you have peeled the tomato, the next one is ready.

    Wow, this recipe rocks!

Second time to make chutney and this was a success considering I:

    - Used 1 kg cherry tomatoes from garden.
    - Did not peel or boil tomatoes or apples (also from garden).
    - Used only 150 grams raw sugar.
    - Had no allspice so ground 3 whole cloves in TM.
    - Used 150 mls of Honey/Apple Cider vinegar brew in fridge.
    - Cooked on Varoma (Step 2) 30 mins Reverse Speed 2.
    - Used 1 tspn ground chillies from our garden as I had no cayenne pepper on hand.

Perfect made four (4) jars of thick spicy chutney.

sweet, but yum 😋. Slight change to recipe. I didn't boil & peel tomatoes. Carried on as per recipe other than using 200g of sugar not 300g. Next time I will try 100g sugar & maybe 100g of apple cider vinegar. 👍

    Submitted by sarab27 on 3. January 2021 - 20:08.

ps following on from my below comment- i just made a 4th batch and added some pumpkin. delicious as well.

im now simply putting all of the tomatoes, apple, onion, pumpkin in the bowl apples and onion in half, tomatoes in whole with top cut out.. speed 5 5 seconds to chop. add remaining ingredients (per below comment - i'm adding less cayenne, 250g sugar, ground clove, no sultanas etc etc) cook 100deg 60mins reverse speed2, cook further 20 mins varoma. that's it. so so simple and easy to modify with great results.

  • Amazing recipe. ...

    Submitted by sarab27 on 3. January 2021 - 15:02.

    Amazing recipe.

I didn't peel tomatoes. Chopped whole with only tops cut out.
Didnt peel apples, and chopped apples and onions a bit more coarsley than the recipe.
Used 1/2 tsp of ground cloves instead of whole.
Added 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper. instead of 1/2tsp.
250g raw sugar instead of 300g.
    No sultanas.

Tastes delicious. Made 3 batches today.

All of the changes in the comments proves that it is a great recipe that can be slightly adapted and as long as the base steps are followed it will be delicious. 👍

I used cherry tomatoes so cooked a little longer as recommended previously. I had no apples so used some fresh apricots that were a little tart. No sultanas so cut up 4 dates and no cayenne so used harissa. Still worked out beautifully.
