Recipe's preparation

    dumplings
  1. Add everything to TM bowl.  Mix on speed 4 for 15-20 seconds.  It should have formed a nice, lightly sticky mixture.  If too sticky add a little more flour.

  2. take most of mixture out of bowl - leaving about a teaspoon IN the bowl to thicken sauce later on.  Divide the mixture into 12

  3. Roll mixture into balls and place in Varoma.  LEAVE ROOM - they will swell

  4. Syrup
  5. add all ingredients into TM bowl.

  6. Put the lid onto the TM bowl, and the Varoma in place

  7. Cook on Varoma Temperature for 20 minutes

  8. Putting it all together
  9. When the dumplings are cooked, place into the Thermoserver.  Pour the syrup over the top.  LEAVE (if you can) for at least 5-10 minutes to allow the dumplings to soak - soaking up to 30 minutes is fine.

  • I haven't had homemade golden syrup dumplings...

    Submitted by jelly580 on 16. June 2018 - 20:33.

I haven't had homemade golden syrup dumplings before so I don't have anything to compare to, but to me these were great - tasty, easy, using staple ingredients.

I used the altered suggestions and thought they came out really well. The sauce seemed a bit thin at first but after standing it thickened up somewhat. The dumplings didn't soak up any sauce but there was plenty there to dunk them in, so it was fine.

They didn't taste as sweet as I thought they would, but that's not a bad thing!

Wooo hoooo, a child hood favourite, Thermofied.

i had tried this out ages ago, but, found it a bit bland, too runny and my dumplings were hard little nuts.

Nervously revisited it tonight, taking on board so many consistent comments in this forum, and, viola! Success.

Left generous sized teaspoon of dough in unwashed bowl, 350 g water, 40 g Golden Syrup & 120g brown sugar at speed 3.5 on Varoma. They really were golden, fluffy dumplings, in syrupy gooey, yummo sauce.

Next time I may use even more Golden syrup, and, some butter to make it richer.

Thank you for this recipe, and HUGE thanks to forum contributors, constructively sharing experiences and ideas. Love it and my Thermie, Thelma.

And again (July 2023) for Baby Bro who gave it "Mum's stamp of approval".

Failed to read properly, didn't see speed of 3.5 as no speed in main recipe, so I just used 1 on reverse. Dumplings (smaller @ 22), soft & fluffy, but sauce a bit runny. I sat in saucepan for about an hour, then gently warmed before serving. Huge hit. Would easily serve 4-5 people for desert.

The syrup was a huge fail, too runny and not much flavour. Tipped it out and used another recipe. Dumplings didn't soak up much syrup either.

  • Not great... syrup way too

    Submitted by Dannielle.woodward on 2. July 2016 - 22:37.

Not great... syrup way too runny, dumplings much too dry (and wouldn't soak up the liquid at all). I think less water, reduce the sugar and increase the golden syrup will help.

    Submitted by amandalosik on 20. December 2015 - 16:51.

If you can't get the dumplings to work for you, use a muffin mold and place the batter in the molds and then into the Varoma, pour the sauce over the dumplings in the molds, after cooking, let them sit for 5-10 mins, still in the Varoma! to steep. You now have single serve golden syrup, self sauced puddings. Still just as yummy, and less mess when serving.

Also, to have more of a thicker sauce, remember the teaspoon of batter left in the bowl to help thicken the sauce, needs to be enough of a teaspoon to make a difference, otherwise the sauce won't thicken. Oh and I accidentally slip with the quantity of syrup each time, definitely enough sauce to soak in the dumplings/puds

Not a fan of these. They just weren't like the saucepan variety I remember as a kid. The dumplings were okay but the sauce was all wrong. I think brown sugar might make a difference but it was missing something else that I can't put my finger on. Will keep searching for the perfect recipe but thank you anyway tmrc_emoticons.)

I thought that they were a little dry as they didn't seem to soak up much of the syrup. I might try to make them smaller next time. I also tweaked it to be sugar free (fructose free), the syruo was good but had to be thickened more

WOW. these are the easiest EVER! I used to make them in a saucepan, would always burn the bottom the syrup would get too hot. My partner isnt a sweets person, ate his down in record time and exclaimed them to be his favourite dessert of all time. looks like these will be a hit in the family for sure! (I did add a bit of cornflour-from sight I could see the sauce was runny and I prefer it slightly thick.)

    Submitted by BlingFish on 31. May 2014 - 20:44.

I made these using Aldi gluten free self raising flour and they turned out great!  I probably didn't leave quite enough mixture in the bowl, my sauce was a bit runny but still tasty.  Next time I think I'll use 400g of water instead of 500g and see how it goes.

  • Hi again - don't be sorry!

Submitted by Bee Keough on 29. January 2013 - 11:31.

Hi again - don't be sorry!  Happy to help.  It sounds as if the sauce needed some more mixture or even a tsp of cornflour in addition to the mixture - as for the dumplings - sorry to make a list of "have you's" for things you probably did do, but best to be sure

    a) did you make sure you had VAROMA temp during the cooking?  if you only used 100oC, that would have made the dumplings small and hard (because they would have not cooked) AND because it wasn't at the higher temp, it would not have reduced the liquid, making it diluted and runny

    b) did you use SR flour for the dumplings?  Or, maybe OLD flour??

    c)  Over mixing of the dumplings will have toughened the mixture?

    Submitted by Kate41 on 29. January 2013 - 08:44.

I'm not really sure what happened.   My dumplings didn't expand and the sauce was runny and watery.   I made sure I left the teaspoon of dough in the bowl as you said.  M I ended up simmering the sauce on the stove for another 20 minutes and adding more golden syrup and flour.   The sauce turned out yum but the dumplings looked like dried apricots.   I will try it again and let you know if it works better for me next time.  Sorry!
