Tip

Try making yourself a toasted sandwich with a layer of Caramelised / Caramelized Onion, sliced grilled sweet potato,  Red Capsicum and sliced Jarlsberg cheese.  A great vegetarian sandwich!  Goes really well with sliced meat as well.

Made one jar of beautiful relish. Very easy. Only change I made was using 45 g sugar and may even reduce to 40 g next time. It was lovely in a sandwich with ham off the bone , cheese and tomato.

Very nice. I added the sugar once it was boiling. Needs a stir with last 5 mins. Might use 1kg onions next time. I think it needs salt in the initial stage of cooking for an even nicer flavour.

Yummy! I made in TM5 and doubled recipe and put on for 40mins and it was perfect. No stuck on bits either. I used a heaped tablespoon of dextrose instead of brown sugar to make it refined sugar free so it was more purpley than dark brown but still good. Thanks for recipe x

    Submitted by tessvp on 22. January 2018 - 16:38.

Such a quick and easy way to caramelise onions as stiring at the stove for so long is not fun!
I added a heaped tablespoon of brown sugar instead of the 75grams and that was sweet enough for me, along with some salt.
Delicious! I also ran a power lead outside and let thermie play with the onions in the back yard to avoid the whole house smelling like onions.

    Submitted by MsSarahJ88 on 26. January 2017 - 16:28.

These are nice however I don't really understand the reason for the high amount of sugar - it is way too much and makes them taste too sweet. Next time I would add maybe 20g of sugar if that and cook for longer to caramelise it. Head the warning and don't add 75g of sugar - I added 50g and it was still too sweet.

Mixingminx - how did you find the best way to get the burnt bits off??? I have made this recipe 3 times - first two no issues, this time I have a large hard patch of black burnt stuff, which is not budging.

    Submitted by Decembergirl on 15. August 2016 - 20:16.

These were amazing! I made a 1/2 batch, and used 50/50 red and brown onions as they were for just my husband and I to have on baked potatoes. Whilst juggling the sick baby, I accidently threw the sugar in with everything else, right from the beginning and it still came out perfectly. I cooked it all for 22 minutes, stirred and cooked another 5 minutes (this last section with the MC on) and they were just divine! Thank you for the wonderful and easy recipe!

This recipe is just amazing! Tastes delicious on burgers & I'll definitely be adding to homemade pizza next time I make some. So simple & using ingredients I always have on hand.

Would anyone know how long these would last for if kept in an airtight container in the fridge? Could they be frozen to extend this? Thankyou!

This is one of the first recipes I tried in my new Thermomix! Delicious!  And I didn't even add the sugar at the end ... I used a really good balsamic vinegar and that gave it flavour enough! So yum!  I've made it multiple times already!
