Recipe's preparation

    Grandmas' Tomato Relish
  1. place whole unpeeled tomatoes into a large bowl and pour boiling water over them and let stand for approx 30secs to a minute. this will loosen the skin of the tomato so that you can now peel the skin off.

put onions into TM bowl and chop 3 to 4 secs/speed 7.

add the  peeled tomatoes half of the vinegar and salt and cook 100degrees/speed1 for 10 minutes. replace MC with basket on top of the TM lid.

    Add sugar and cook 100degrees/ 8 to10minutes/ speed2

mix the flour, mustard and curry powder with remaining vinegar to a paste and add to the relish and cook 100degrees/ 2minutes

then put into hot sterile jars and seal.

  • I just wonder if people left

    Submitted by Trainmummy on 21. May 2016 - 22:18.

I just wonder if people left the MC on instead of the basket? I would guess that that leaving the MC on whilst cooking would keep in the liquids instead of the mixture thickening. I left the basket on instead of the MC and it was a pretty good texture. Still a bit sweet but I think it will develop over the next few days.

  • Thanks for recipe...I used it

    Submitted by LisaBart on 7. March 2015 - 11:35.

Thanks for recipe...I used it really to know how long to cook etc, but basically followed yours....I don't eat onion so replaced it with 3 big garlic cloves, used a big Tbspn chilli paste, and probably 1200g tomatoes.

    I'm happy with it tmrc_emoticons.)

For those who say it wasn't to their liking...we all like our relish different and I am just thankful that I have at least a base recipe to follow as I am new the thermi cooking.

Am off to follow the zuchinni relish one now, though will use my ingredients tmrc_emoticons.)

  • I used raw sugar but I will

    Submitted by Smurfi on 18. February 2015 - 14:45.

I used raw sugar but I will reduce the amount slightly,

I used 1 1/2tbl  spoons of mustard seeds instead of the powder

I used white vinegar and sweet paprika.

I didnt pour the water over my tomatoes and I didnt peel them, just threw them straight in skin and all I did only use Tom thumbs out of my garden

I put 1 1/2 tbl spoons of curry powder

Mine turned out fantastic just a teeny bit too sweet which as I said I will adjust. It was more like the old fashioned relish!

    Yummo!

  • Not good at all. Way too

    Submitted by Joolm on 18. April 2014 - 16:43.

Not good at all. Way too sweet. Recipe was strange: no scrape down after chopping onion, so I had raw onion all over the sides and lid after cooking. The end result was runny and the tomatoes still whole since the TM never goes fast enough to chop them (I added a chopping step). Very sweet, vinegary and runny. The addition of the flour just made it a gluey sticky consistency but still too runny to be like relish.

  • I made it today too...

    Submitted by Sarstar81 on 13. February 2014 - 16:14.

I made it today too... unfortunately I have had the same issues. Way too sweet. I thought it was a lot of sugar but I prefer to follow a recipe to start with so I can make changes. Mine is also like a sauce, not thick to put on a sandwich or anything. I might have to use it for pasta or in a slow cooker meal. Are the  quantities correct?

    Thanks

    Sarah

    Hi

i made this tonight with no success tmrc_emoticons.( I was hoping fir a chunky tomato finish but have more like a sauce. Is the qty of vinegar correct? It's also very very sweet. It tastes nice enough though but not sure if i can salvage what i have does yours have a thin or chunky consistency when you make it? Any suggestions as to where i may have gone wrong as im guessing your gran had a great recipe

    thanks
