Hi,

Did you end up getting it fixed?? I am having the same problem. And I agree, for something that costs so much money, this problem is occuring a LOT which shows there is something wrong with the product. I also disagree with the steep service fee + handling fee so am wondering what happened with you??
The error messages have been occuring for a year intermittently but just today, nothing I do gets it working.

Would love to hear if you ended up sending it in.

Thanks!

Hi, I've also had the Error C161 come up repeatedly and the machine just stops. I have the TM5. My daughter who also has the TM5 has this issue as well. I have not been using it to cook lately because it is so frustrating to not be able to finish cooking the dish and to then have to wait till it allows me to open it again; then having to repeatedly try again and again and still getting the error code. I eventually have to tip it all into a pot and continue from there, which seems like such a waste of time and double the cleaning. The family then have to wait for their meal.... does not make for a happy family nor a happy cook! Thermomix Head Office, can you please help me to resolve this issue?

Hi
You can check out the fix on youtube here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5eTmI62rBA
My husband watched the clip and did as it said, and my thermomix hasn't had a problem since. Really easy fix - tightening a few screws basically.
Hope it helps!

I have been getting error c161 when I was making chicken cacciatore recently. I have barely used the recipe chip functionality since as I don't want to end up with a half cooked meal that ends up going to waste. I realise my TM5 is well past the warranty date (purchased new in 2014), how do I go about getting this looked at & how much will the repair cost?

We have the same issue as everyone else. Purchased around Dec 2014.... 20min dish has taken over 1.5hrs and I've given up. Currently finishing on the cooktop.
Please tell me this is a no charge repair, given the volume of people with the same problem!

Hi
I'm having the C161 and C145 issues as well. Bought my machine also in November 2014....seems to be a theme here! Could someone from the service department please contact me, thanks

Hi,
We bought one of the first TM5 back in October 2014.
Around 2 years ago we started having error C161 intermittently. It seems to occur when you cook hot dish for a long time. The machine just stops and reboots. You need to wait until things cool down... loosing a lot of time.

We rang Thermomix but we understood that we had to pay for the shipping/ repair.
Very disappointing.

But because it was not happening very often, we just lived with it... until now when the issue occurs almost systematically.
Lots of C145 error then C161 and the machine stops and reboots.

This is Extremely frustrating, you cannot even finish cooking a dish!

For a $2000 machine this is a massive disappointment. We are not willing to pay for a fix which is obviously a design fault (look at the length of this thread!)

What can Thermomix propose??

Can anyone give me some feedback on what happened to your machine once you started to see the C161 error? My machine started showing it 6 months ago but then it would go away, now it comes up sporadically and it's really starting to frustrate me, I'm halfway through my soup and can't get it to work again.

I have been experiencing this error while cooking/ steaming for. Few years now. Thermomix never replied to my earlier complaints. It is an ongoing issue, and I have stopped using the thermomix to cook/ steam. Its now basically an overpriced blender. What are going to do about it? This does not seem to be an isolated issue. I would expect better service for something I pain 2700 AUD for.

Hi Ummtariq

Sorry to hear you have experienced issues with your butterfly whisk. We have passed your post onto our Customer Service team. Someone will be in touch with you to discuss.

In the mean time we hope these instructions assist you and others in fixing the butterfly whisk –

Place the Butterfly Whisk onto the blade.

Slightly turn it against the intended rotation of the blade. Turn the Butterfly Whisk anticlockwise to lock, if the blade is set to normal forward direction. It should be hooked under the blade now and it should not be possible to pull it off vertically.

Its ball-shaped end ensures that it can be removed easily. To remove the Butterfly whisk, hold the ball-shaped end and pull it out while turning it in both directions to release it from under the blade.

Do not add ingredients that might damage or block the butterfly whisk when it is attached to the blade and the motor is running. Make sure ingredients are not too large and the bowl is not overloaded. As per manufacturer’s instructions, do not use the Butterfly Whisk over speed 4, this will dislodge the Butterfly Whisk.

We hope this information helps. Someone will be in touch with you to discuss.

Warm regards

Hi. I have been consistently getting C161 error any time I am cooking something hot; also C144/c145 telling me the lid cannot be licked in position (despite it very apparently being in a secure position on the jug). This is incredibly frustrating, and I have only been able to use it for pancake batter and dough for the last 6 months. This is incredibly frustrating, and the world’s most expensive mixing bowl! I have been so very careful with this machine since I bought it, which makes things like this all the more frustrating. Interestingly, my machine has started requiring a password (thank goodness my first guess of 0000 was correct). I would also love some insight into this. I would appreciate contact from the TM team to discuss.

I have just got the C161 error when I’d almost finished cooking my meatballs. From all the comments it appears to be a common problem. Is the only remedy to send your machine away to be fixed? It would be nice to think Thermomix are taking note of all the issues with this error and finding a permanent solution.

Hi. I have a thermomix model TM5 which today has come up with the error "C161 device switches off. please confirm a restart". I have no idea what this means. It has in the past also come up with an error which switched the machine off (sorry, can't remember the error code, I think it was the same one) which I assumed was due to overheating/hot cooking for longer periods. It always seems to happen when cooking stew-like meals such as butter chicken and goulash. It actually put me off from using my very expensive kitchen tool for quite some time. I just found it so frustrating. Today it was a dahl dish. Whilst I can restart the machine, it just keeps coming up with the same error and hence I cannot complete my meal in the device I started it in.

Why would these errors be occurring?? It is a $2000 machine and should not have such faults. It is very disappointing as well as completely inconvenient when having to transfer to the stove top to complete the cooking of our meal. I bought this machine to make cooking easier, having to transfer the cooking process certainly doesn't do that. From what I can see here it appears to be a pretty common fault. And for the price it costs, I don't think this is acceptable.

Hi jujiba,

It will most likely keep happening as its a problem with the arms. The Thermomix team sent me an email with how to return my Thermomix so they could fix it. I sent it on a Friday, they received it Monday, repaired it the same day and sent it right back. I had it back by the Wednesday. Absolutely fabulous service, so quick and easy to get it sorted.

Thanks,
Henny

I got this error for the first time last night (I have had my machine only 3yrs).

I had finished cooking and was cleaning the bowl using the turbo function. My TM5 shut down as soon as I tried to start the turbo. I unplugged the machine, waited and tried again but continued to happen.

I googled the error today and this thread came up.

I have also just now re-tested my TM5 and appears to be working. HOWEVER, will the error keep coming back now that I have had it once??

Almost finished the tomato ketchup when the thermomix decided to stop working - error code C161. Allowed to cool for a while then tried resuming, worked for about 4 minutes and then same error. Noticed others have had the same issue so obviously a fault somewhere. It is annoying that a piece of equipment that cost over $2,000 and only had for a couple of years, should be breaking down this quickly.

Hi BronandTribe,
I had error message C161 come up last night when I was using my machine. Just wondering if you had any luck with yours and if so what happened. My machine is out of warranty (of course) and so many seem to be getting this same message so to me it is a fault of the machine that should be fixed for free even if it's out of warranty.
I'm hoping you have had success with yours now.

This extremely expensive piece of machinery has decided to crap itself. On the 27 May 17, I first received the C161 message and after many attempts and cool off time the machine functioned again. Tonight, I was making pumpkin soup and the C161 message came on the machine and it switched off. On restart, the C145 message appears, repeatedly, then it works for a few seconds and then the C161 appears again. I waited an hour for the machine to cool and it still does this repeatedly. The machine will not complete the soup at all and so after too many attempts to count and 2 hours later, I have lumpy soup that cannot be completed. The machine will not function, C145 and C161 are appearing every time a function requires the lid to be locked.

Upon this message appearing I googled this error and there seems to be a systemic issue with this error, why is it not being addressed for all machines? Is there a recall or upgrade/update that this machine should be receiving??? Reading the forum this seems to be a manufacturers issue and as such, I would have expected that a known issue would have customers notified and the issue corrected rather than a customer finding out their machine is stuffed halfway through a meal.

This is not the first issue with this machine. The original lid had to be replaced due to the rubber swelling when hot. Now I cannot even complete a recipe. This is ridiculous for a machine I paid over $2000 for! I now live 900kms from the person who sold me the machine so cannot even access help there. This machine needs to be sorted out immediately. This is not acceptable at all!

The butterfly is also an issue. Every single time we do mashed potato, we ensure the butterfly is correctly positioned and check and recheck that it is before the cooking process starts and every single time it stays in place only until you hear the change in the blades speed or direction not long after cooking starts . Then it rises off the base and gets chewed by the blades. EVERY SINGLE TIME. I have taken to holding my finger on the top of the butterfly until this change in speed/direction has passed so that the stupid thing stays in place. This is not something that I should have to do when I am using the appliance exactly as the manufacturer recommends and the demonstrator showed me. It is also dangerous but without that pressure it will not stay in place, therefore rendering the machine unusable for that function. Reading the forum tonight I am not the only person this occurs with either.

I am really regretting purchasing this machine and it does not get anywhere near the use it should because it just doesn't function in the easy, problem free manner in which it was represented to me. I am very unhappy about this and I would like immediate contact. I have also messaged through the customer contact section. Thank you.
