Great recipe and the comments here are helpful.

Next time, as per comments I'd increase the spices:
    - 1.5 tsp each of cumin, coriander and garam masala. 2 tsp if your spices are a bit older
    - 1 t salt or equiv thermo vegetable stock

This made 6 cups, so ~6 serves. I froze the leftovers in 1 cup portions.

I cooked this dal tonight. Followed The recipe exactly as directed. I added some corriander stems that I had in the freezer. It turned out good, but I think it could be improved. Next time I will use stock instead of water and add garam masala, as others have.

Doubled, maybe tripled, the spices. Added some Keens curry powder & turmeric. Served with rice, yoghurt & parsley because I didn't have fresh coriander. Quick & really tasty dinner from what I had on hand, can't ask for better than that 😎

Absolutely delicious on cold winter night. I added, 1 tsp Keen's curry powder, sprinkle of chilli flakes, 1/4 tsp 100% pure tumeric powder, half tin coconut milk, 1 potato,1 carrot, 1 whole capsium. It turned out perfect not watery not too thick.
cooked for 10min's then stirred myself with spatula then another 10min's then stirred myself with spatula then last 5min's.
Served with Brown Rice/Quinoa on side 👌🏼

    Pretty good!

I added a spoon of dried vege stock, heaped the teaspoons of spices, used bottled ginger and garlic. Put in the whole can of coconut milk but it was too runny. I ended up putting it in a saucepan at the end to reduce the mixture which was heaps better. Next time I might omit the water and see how that goes. I didn't have a capsicum so added more carrot. To serve I put spinach in the bottom of the bowl, a drizzle of tamari and a dollop of natural yoghurt on top. Yum 😋

    Submitted by ustwoplusafew on 2. September 2018 - 14:55.

Like many others I love this recipe. I stuck to the recommendations of upping the spices and I'm glad I did. Also, chucked in the veggie stock cube. I also included garam masala in the same amount as the other spices. I also used about 1/4 tsp of cayenne as I was out of chilli pepper. This def gave it a little kick but not overly hot. Our 16 month old granddaughter loved it, so def not too spicy.

Lots of flavour and even better the next day. It does thicken up when cold.

Made coconut cauli rice to go with and is equally good with basmati coconut rice. This will be a new regular for us.

Tried this one last weekend when I had some friends over. Everyone really enjoyed the recipe's taste. The chilli adds a nice kick to the dish without making it too hot. Lovely with fresh corriander on top and some nice crusty sourdough bread to dip in.

Fantastic! At last a recipe that all 5 members of my family enjoyed- including a very fussy teenager. Served it with a mix of brown and white coconut rice
I added some broccoli but can totally see how all sorts of veg could be used.
I added some vege stock paste and garam masala and it was super delicious. definitely making again.

Soooooo good! I used a zucchini instead of red capsicum (coz that's what I had in the fridge) and I added a tbsp of veg stock paste - amazing! I also added some small cauliflower florets in for last 15mins just to add texture. Served with brown rice and the 5 year old smashed it.

    Submitted by Chevmag on 15. July 2017 - 17:46.

This is SO good, my new favourite dahl. The only variance I did was add some garam masala as I ran out of ground cumin. Also added 3 cauliflower florets just to use up. Served to 4 generations as entree, they all loved it. Including the grandson who HATES coconut, husband HATES lentils (he thinks they only come in brown!!) granddaughter very suspicious of anything resembling vegetables. Winner, thank you for posting. Smile **I didn't say that I forgot to add my chopped coriander & yoghurt, found it after I served! Will add tomorrow to make go further, plus as it's gotten cold, it is a lot thicker.

  • I made this tonight for the

    Submitted by Kaaateee on 22. January 2015 - 23:10.

I made this tonight for the four of us (2 adults, 2 kids). I used a fresh chilli (deseeded) instead of the flakes and found that it had enough spice to keep the adults interested, without being so hot that the kids wouldn't eat it.

I poured the second half of the coconut milk into the saucepan (along with the water) to cook my basmati rice instead of drizzling it on top of the dahl. We ended up with a beautiful tasting dahl dish that we were all very happy with, fluffy, fragrant coconut basmati rice, and some microwaved pappadums. Clean plates all round - what more can I ask for?

I would highly recommend this recipe, and I estimate that it would serve 6 adults quite easily.

Very tasty and now saved to my favourites. I've been looking for a good Dahl receipe for the thermie for a while now. I used one fresh tomato instead of tinned as I don't like it too tangy. I also left out the veggies as I was serving with other curries. Thank you for a great recipe.  Will be making again.
