My machine is 6 months old, first problem was eratic scales at initial demo, somewhat disconcerting to have brand new $2K machine sent off for repair.  Now I have C160 error, so machine is off again for repair!!  Yes it's nice to have it all done under warranty, but this is still a new and expensive appliance and one would expect a little more trouble free usage.  It is a huge inconvenience without machine, plus the hassle of pickup and return has not been without drama.  The booking of the wrong company for my area and then the time delay to re-book, plus the 'anytime between 9am-5pm' means the whole day lost waiting around.  I have been sold a 'lemon' and I feel Thermomix could do more to keep their customers happy.  If these 'glitches' continue to occur after warranty expires will Thermomix guarantee free repair?  Warranty should be extended to show good faith in their product.  I have fingers crossed that a friend who bought because of my (perhaps foolish) recommendation, doesn't run into the same problems as I now have.

Any idea when I will be contacted??

Update - I have at last received my machine back. I was notified last Wednesday that it would be delivered Friday. The staff member who phoned me checked the address with me and it was correct. BUT, it wasn't - although they had organised TNT to pick it up from the same address - my work - they somehow added the suburb of my home address on - this resulted in a delay for delivery to today - 4 days after I should have got it. When I phoned them there was no apology - promises of phoning me back never happened. I feel I have been treated very poorly - and as we all know going a weekend without your machine is a very trying thing indeed. So I am warning you all now - WHEN THEY PHONE YOU TO CHECK THE RETURN ADDRESS - I RECOMMEND THAT YOU ASK THEM TO READ IT BACK TO YOU AT LEAST 3 TIMES!!!

I agree with you on that.  It would be interesting to know just how many machines were affected, we only know about the ones who have posted on the forum.  Perhaps the model was released before sufficient testing was carried out.  But whatever the reason, it is not a good outcome for such an expensive purchase.  My purchase was in early December 2014 and I certainly did not know then about these problems.  I would have thought twice about it had I known what I know now.

Good to hear.  However it seems like a problem that is well known to the company based on the complaints going back from when TM5 was released.  If I was advised that this was a problem at time of paying over $2,000 I would not have gone ahead.  I think TM5 users should be given an explanation of why the problem (even if it's only on some machines) was not advised prior to purchase.  My purchase was in February 2015 and the problem was definitely known.  Perhaps a product recall notice would be appropriate - like what happens with other products in Australia where there is a known fault.  I look forward to an explanation of what my options are from here.

I got the C160 message yesterday, twice.  I panicked, thought I had broken it.  Still don't know why this happened but hope to get some answers soon.  Lot of money to pay for something that seems to have faults.  So disappointing.  In the meantime I am not game to use it at all.

hi, I just cooked pumpkin soup and got the C144 lid error and then the c160 error. not sure what to do. have had no errors previously.

I too was having 161 and 144 errors.  TM promptly arranged for my TM to be shipped back to them for repair.

Tonight however I received a bill from Thermomix stating that locking control arms and control levers have been replaced under warranty, HOWEVER while checking the machine they "noticed noisy operation".  "Spill was found inside TM upon inspection, through motor. Motor requires replacement (spill had been there for some time which has damaged the bearing inside motor) and full clean. Cost of motor not covered by warranrty. Requires full service; recalibrate and balance; full function test".  COST TO ME:  $193 for new motor.

My question is, how did a spill get "inside" the machine?  The only warning I was given was to ensure the pins were always dried before connection.  I was always particular with this.  So, even if a spill has entered the motor of the machine, how could I have possibly seen it or cleaned it?

The machine is only 6 months old.  Will the motor, locking control arms and control levers die another 3 times before the warranty is up, and what happens once the warrenty expires?  I simply can't afford $400 in repairs every 6 months :( for a home cooking appliance.

Finally, to add insult to injury "all charges must be paid in full before the machine is released".  On my original order form and tax invoice there is an "Important Information for Customers" list.  Under the term Limitation of Liability it states "You are entitled to a replacement or refund for a major failure and for compensation for any other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage".  The machine won't operate unless the locking arms function properly, therefore there is no doubt that this is a major failure if the arms need replacing.  I am not currently seeking a refund/replacement or compensation, but if pushed to pay for repairs that should be under warranty I will quickly want to severe my loyalty to TM and seek a refund under CCA laws.

Sadly I'm also having the same problem with difficulties getting the lid back on causing multiple C144 error messages then it going to C160 and shutting down.  :-(

Is anyone able to shed more light on the problem and a solution????

Hi. I'm brand new to this forum.  Have enjoyed using my TM5 but disappointed as I am also getting these problems.  Was cooking corned beef.  Could not get the lid back on to clean the bowl to make a sauce. Same problem happening with any recipe requiring long duration cooking time (anything more than an hour).  Please help.  This shouldn't happen with such an expensive appliance. Have owned my machine only for a couple of months - a gift from my partner.

Also have intermittent problem with flickering scales requiring a restart. Had family over to show off the Thermomix.  Embarrassing.  Thermomix please get in touch with me to get the machine fixed, replaced,  or a refund.

Just cooked a Beef & Red Wine Casserole only on temp. 100 and when trying to clean my machine it just keeps coming up with C160 error and shutting down. I have even emptied out the water and it won't work with nothing in it, it closes and then goes for a couple of seconds and then stops.

I got the C160 error message last night, but it was after cooking varoma before hand at only sp1 and later sp2. I tried to blend my sauce (it was a similar meal to the volute) with no heat on anymore as I'd finished cooking and kept getting this message after the lid not on message, It would let me blend for 10 sec or so and then shut down.

What do I do now? I hav eno consultant in my area, as she's left, still trying to find out what happended to my Jan promo thermoservers, thankfully no money was paid, cause I never received anything.

I too got this error last night after cooking a chicken in the varoma. My consultant said that you must not use the machine if this message comes up as it will eventually lead to you not being able to use the machine at all. Just thought I would post this information for anyone getting the same error and trying to find out what it means. I also got a 145 error in regard to the lid. I am waiting now for my Thermomix consultant to give me a call. Not happy as I need to make some baby food!! It is very disappointing to pay so much money for a machine that breaks down after 5 months of use!

Thanks

Hi Connockety

Thermonix paid for freight both ways for my repair last week, and no charge for the repair as the unit is under warranty.

Hi,

I have had an issue with the TM5 when on high speed for quite a while now- an error message pops up to say that scales function not available at high speeds - this happens when I am no where near the unit to press the scales function. Tonight cooking the Tomato ketchup recipe in the basic cook book on the last action which was blending for 1 minute. The C160 error message came up at 30 seconds into the one minute. Machine shut down after pressing the OK button. Went through the whole lot again using the recipe chip again and the same thing happened. Only blended for about 30 seconds before C160 error message. Have contacted my distributor. Pretty disappointed. Use my thermomix many times a day so being without during repair is going to be a real trial. Don't have any back up mixers/food processor.

Can anyone let me know if they have had to pay for the postage for repair?

Thanks Andrea

I am hoping it gets the repair and all will be well after that, fingers crossed!!

Hi Mandy and Kev

I have now received my TM5 back from service, after contacting my rep. she organized the repair and the turn around was fantastic, picked up on monday, repaired and delivered to me on friday (5 days wow!).

I am in melbourne and the service is in melbourne so this must help.

I did a big cook (90min) using the Varoma and all went well.

Hoping your experience is as good.

I also have the encountered the same problem as you "The Dragon" when using my thermo tonight. C144 and C160 errors. Was making vegie soup. Errors occured after the cooking period and was trying to blend it. Errors kept coming up. I rinsed the lid under cold water and that then fitted but kept getting the C160 error and shutting down. Very annoying as I had to remove all the soup from the bowl and then blitz with my stick blender. I rinsed the bowl out in cold water and placed it on the machine and was able to wash it. They seem to be heat related problems. Will definately want this sorted out!!  My rep is sending in a service report and hopefully it will be collected soon. Living in North West WA!

Is everyone here satisfied with just sending their machine away for repair and not receiving any detailed explanation from thermomix as to why this problem is occurring in so many TM5s or compensation for time without the $2000 machine we have paid for?

Has anyone here received any compensation?

After my machine has failed to work for the second time- first the faulty arm issue and now the scales not working- I know I am not satisfied. All thermomix has offered is another repair and their level of service has definitely not been to the standard they advertise their company as having.

For those that have their machines sent to the service centre again, I suggest you request a consultant organise pick up of your machine in the very least. I requested this from Thermomix.

I have also lodged an official complaint with the ACCC and the Department of Commerce in WA to try and work toward a satisfactory resolution and suggest anyone who is not satisfied do the same.

Thermomix- I do not require a response from you to this message. I am seeking responses from other customers.

Hi bellnick,

Thank you for your patience whilst we waited for confirmation from our manufacturer. We can confirm that the Varoma speed limits are as per the Thermomix manuals appropriate to your model. This is to say that if you have a TM31 it is not recommended to go above speed 2 and if you have a TM5 the recommended speed limit is up to speed 6. If you have any queries with specific recipes, please contact us at customerservice@thermomix.com.au

Thermomix Head Office

Hi Bellnick

When I had the C160 error the thermomix was on speed 2 for a 70minute cook, so I don't think that is the problem.

On page 24 of the Instruction Manual it states to use low speeds (spoon) to 6 when using the Varoma and to allow 250g of water per quarter hour, so I suppose a longer time just means you need to pause and add water as you cook.

My Thermomix is waiting to be picked up for repair!!

Regards.

Coming up 3 weeks, any update on what the recommendations are for using the Varoma on what speed & for how long?

Since having my machine returned I think I've used it twice. This purchase was the biggest waste of money. I'm really disappointed with the whole sales pitch of how wonderful Thermomix is...the reality is so far removed. Thermomix actually sent me an email saying they were sorry for the inconvenience of being without my machine for so long and promised to send me a Thermoserver. Do you think I have seen the Thermoserver or had any further correspondence from them.....NO.

I received my TM in Jan and have used it pretty much for every meal.  Today, I have encountered this C160 and C144 error.  I was cooking the Chicken Caccitore which I've made before so nothing new or special for the machine (and no Varoma).  Endless attempts to get it working again to no avail.  It disappoints me to see how many people are having this problem given the price of the machine, ie, I really thought I was buying a quality product that would last and not very impressed that I'm going to have to ship it back to the Service Centre.  Obviously a design fault, so what are we paying so much money for?  Hopefully my Consultant can do something to save me a lot of hassle, but I don't envisage that he will be able to, afterall, he is not a technician.

When using my Thermomix TM5 with the Varoma while cooking lamb for greater than an hour, removed lid to add water to the bowl and then after replacing the lid and Varoma got error C160 when I restarted it, the unit had to be closed down. (only option)

Restarted the Thermomix and then kept getting error C144 multiple times then got C160 again, could not use the thermomix so removed lamb to oven to finish

When I tried to put the unit into Transport Mode to send back to Thermomix for repair kept getting error C144 many – many times.

Finally while pressing down the lid I had to also press down the lid sensor lever at back of lid and finally got it to lock.

I have noticed that the lid is very difficult to get back on the bowl and tends to pop up when it is hot, this could also be causing problems with the lid sensor lever

The error C144 seems to be connected with the lid sensor lever, but error C160 is I think a further connected software error.

The Thermomix is a great kitchen appliance, just hope these problems are only under warranty teething problems and not on going.

Damn! I've had this one tonight, too! Cooking Tenina's silverside. I did the slower speed on Varoma, but the machine just kept shutting down.

I've also had the display flickering between scales and home a few times too. Most alarming. I always had a feeling that the more computerised this machine was, the more problems I'd have. Already had the chip replaced.I hate being without my Thermo.

Hi all,

while cooking tonight I had the C160 error and the machine keeps shutting down.  The consultant I bought it through has left and she gave me the group leaders details so I have emailed her.

Will let you know how I go

I had this error code tonight when trying to blend hot food twice. Consultant has logged this so waiting to hear. Hope I have not killed it as I buy expensive appliances as I kill cheaper ones

You will need to have your machine sent back  to your Local THermomix office . In my case the rep organised for me to drop it back to Thermomix Brisbane . It was away for a week .Thermomix did thorough review and all  warranty  checked and   issues adressed. Have had the unit back for over 4 weeks now and use every day   no issues . I am a bit p[eeveed though that Thermomix  contiue not to sell Thermoservers  . You would think after the issues we have all gone through tthey would relax this rule and alow us to buy them.

Hi All,

I was cooking soup last night and received the C160 error and then the machine shut down - i tried a couple of times but the same thing keep happening.

I have sent an email to my consultant but no response yet.

Any idea?

Hi Shelby55,

Sorry to hear about that. Our office is currently closed, however a member of the team will be in contact with you  directly when the office re-opens on Tuesday.

I received this error a few months back whilst cooking corned beef, but I haven't tried that recipe again since and hadnt got the error again. But tonight I was making quirky cooking's creamy chicken and rice soup and received the c160 error (and the hot lid error too, many times) a number of times, I only had 2 minutes left of cooking so I served up as it was and let everything cool down.

Around 2 hours later and I have the error again cooking fruit puree as per the chip recipe.

Will my machine need to be sent away? I'll contact my consultant at a more reasonable hour.

Hi bellnick,

Thank you for your enquiry.

We are currently seeking further clarification from the manufacturer regarding using Varoma up to speed 6 for our TM5 customers and will share this information with you when available.

Thermomix, what is the recommendation when cooking something for a long period of time in a TM5 using the varoma eg. chicken, silverside? I was at a cooking class last week & the consultants mentioned that you need to use at least a speed of 3.5 to assist the steam to move up & help cook your food.

There seems to be some contention reading posts in various places saying that it should only be on speed 2 & anything more can cause the C160 error. Is this the case? If so, you might want to pass this onto your consultants as well? I used my varoma for quite a long period last weekend & found using speed 3.5 worked much better than the sp 2 I was using before as on the low speed it took much longer for anything to cook.

I dropped it into the local head office, and they had it fixed and couriered back to me within a week.

I too have error C160 and C144. Third time it's happen. Plus I've already had the recipe chip replaced. Not happy at all. A friend that purchased hers at the same time is sending it back for repair tomorrow with error C39. Doesn't seem to be the fantastic machine it's made out to be.

Couldnt help but notice that a consultant has posted the "positive experience" comment directly below (word for word) on other social media giving the impression it is their own experience.

I still don't have a working TM5....going on 6 weeks now...

Well, I have some good news regarding the C160 error. It is a software error with the arms. The machine basically picks up the error and shuts itself down.

It happened to my machine the weekend before last.(Saturday) Coincidentally mine was also in the middle of making the rice salad.  My consultant picked it up for me on Monday - I got a call from the service dept in WA an hour later saying that they received the service request.  I was told it would be approx 10 working days - but it was only 7. I received a call yesterdqay at 11am saying it was ready and could they deliver it back this afternoon (!!) I got it back yesterday and am happy to report that after making Vegetable soup and 3 lots of ganache I havent had a problem.

So far so good.  After the C160 error popped up and the machine shutdown, I restarted it but it wouldnt close again. So I hope this gives a few of you some clarity.. I found the service department to be very responsive and efficient in my case, I hope for those of you who are still waiting that you get your TM5 back ASAP. Thanks.

My TM5 has already been to the service centre once for repairs and was returned to me damaged and with new faults. And it was also packed very poorly for transit so who knows what other internal damage it has.

And what is Thermomix's solution - a free cookbook and return it to the service centre for repairs again!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!! I've been without a working TM5 for over a month and now its going to drag on longer. How about you refund my money?

It's clear in my case you do not have the capability or skill to repair the faults in my machine.
