This is my 'go to' recipe to make for friends and family if they are having a rough time for whatever reason. So simple, quick and TASTY!! every person I've made it for has said it is one of the best dahls they've had. So easy to whip up at short notice with pantry staples. How I do it...
1. omit the chilli flakes (kids 🙄)
2. Add a dash of fresh or jar ginger.
3. I read previous comments and always do the liquid with a big can of coconut milk then up to 750g with water.
So creamy and hearty on a cold winters night.

This is divine! My first ever attempt making Dahl after my naturopath encouraged more lentils and chickpeas in my diet. Followed all the tips and did the half half coconut milk/water and tinned tomatoes as I was out of tomatoes. Such an easy pantry staple cook up. Tried it for brekkie as I made it straight after veggie stock cook up. So warming and flavoursome. Thankyou

Absolutely amazing! Thank you for sharing. I logged in to finally leave a comment. I cook this dahl twice a week! Freezes great too. A firm favourite in our house. I leave out the chilli and tomato. We used to get a lovely takeaway dahl when we lived in the city, and never been able to recreate it - until now! Thank you so much

Loved This! It was my first attempt so kept to the recipe, except I followed the suggested things with the half water half coconut milk. It's delish. I'm having quinoa with it instead of rice as I need to keep my carbs down at night. 👍🏻

Hi...
Hi
This is a great recipe. I made some slight variations, which people may find adds to the already great flavour.
What I use:
Main:
Lentils
some baby tomatoes (equivalent to a big tomato - so about 8-9)
About 25ml of tomato paste
Spices:
Two small green chillis
3 cloves of garlic
1 tbsp of curry powder
1 tbsp of garam masala
1 tbsp of cumin
1 tbsp of turmeric
Some fresh coriander (handful)
Some fresh ginger (thumb size)
I find the fresh coriander and the fresh ginger really brings the dhal alive and rounds the flavours of the curry, cumin, turmeric and masala.

Delicious without coconut milk. I added carrot and eggplant for extra vegie component. Used hot paprika as didn't have chilli. Increased quantities by 1/3 as have TM5. Will make again, yum! Thanks for posting.

Thank you. Wish I had tried to make this sooner. It was very easy and tasty. I added half a zuchinni and a celery stick into the first step with extra chili. Added two tomotoes and next time I might add some eggplant as well. Also did a combo of water and coconut milk. So good. Thanks.

Thank you for such an easy recipe. It is a nice change from meat and three veg which my hubby is so accustomed to. I added spinach at the end, and made garlic and spinach naan bread to go with it. Devine

I make this recipe at least
I make this recipe at least once a week sometimes more. Quick, easy, nutritious and cheap work lunches. Hubby loves it too which is high compliments as he can be quite fussy, especialku when it comes to meat free dishes. Thanks for sharing! It's my go to recipe. Sometimes I will add celery, carrot zucchini and blitz it with the onion and garlic in the early steps.

So easy, quick and yummy!!
I omit the cumin and add (a lot) of salt :O and it tastes just like my Indian nana's!
I also hard boil a few eggs (if I've got them) then halve and stir through the finished dahl.
The dahl freezes fantastically too so I have a stash of (low salt ) portions in the freezer for an easy go to meal for my kids!
Thank you very much for a quick, healthy and tasty recipe!
