Nan’s Tinned Tomato Relish
Relish
- 1 onion, medium, cut in half
- 1 cloves garlic, (optional)
- 800 g tomatoes, tinned (diced)
- 200 g white sugar
- 125 g vinegar, brown
- 125 g vinegar, white
- 1 tbsp salt
- 2 tsp curry powder
- 2 tsp mustard
- 2 tbsp plain flour

- 1. Place onion and garlic (optional) into mixing bowl. Chop 5 sec / speed 5. Scrape down sides.
- 2. Add 2 tbsp tomato from tin. Saute for 3 min / 100°C / speed 1.
- 3. Add tomatoes, sugar, brown vinegar, white vinegar, salt, curry powder, and mustard powder. 10 sec / speed 3 to combine.
- 4. Cook for 10 min / 100°C / speed 2 / MC off, use splash guard or simmering basket on lid.
- 5. Mix flour with a small amount of vinegar to create a paste. Add to the bowl and cook for 5–10 min / 100°C / speed 2 / MC off, until thickened to desired consistency.
To make the relish:

Optional – Blend for smooth texture
→ 10 sec / speed 5–6, or to preferred texture.

Delicious with cold meats, cheese platters, sausage rolls, or sandwiches.

Storage
Pour hot relish into sterilised jars. Seal immediately. Store in a cool, dark place. Refrigerate after opening.

For cooking (simmering) at temperatures of 95°C or above (200°F), the simmering basket should always be used instead of the TM6 measuring cup, as the TM6 measuring cup fits tightly in the lid. The simmering basket rests loosely on top, is steam-permeable, and also prevents food spatter from the mixing bowl. -

If you are using a Thermomix® TM6 measuring cup with your Thermomix® TM5:
For cooking (simmering) at temperatures of 95°C or above (200°F), the simmering basket should always be used instead of the TM6 measuring cup, as the TM6 measuring cup fits tightly in the lid. The simmering basket rests loosely on top, is steam-permeable, and also prevents food spatter from the mixing bowl.Please note that the TM5 mixing bowl has a larger capacity than the TM31 (capacity of 2.2 liters instead of 2.0 liters for TM 31). Recipes for the Thermomix TM5 may not be cooked with a Thermomix TM31 for safety reasons without adjusting the quantities. Risk of scalding by spraying of hot liquids: Do not exceed the maximum filling quantity and observe the filling level markings of the mixing bowl!
