Recipe's preparation

    Method
  1. 1. Place milk & butter in bowl, and mix on 37 degrees, speed 1 for 2 minutes.

    2. Add in egg to milk mixture and mix speed 4, 5 seconds.

    3. In this order - Add in Yeast, then flour, then the caster sugar & the salt last. Mix on speed 6 for 6 seconds to combine, then knead for 3 minutes

    4. Place dough in a greased bowl and cover and place in a warm place to prove for 1 hour or until dough has doubled in size.

    5. Once the dough is proved, knock down onto a floured surface and cut dough in half until you have 2 balls.

    6. Roll each ball into a 25cm long log, then cut each log into pieces and roll each piece into a ball and place on piece of baking paper and let prove for a further 15 minutes.

    7. While the dough balls are proving, warm up your deep fryer, or oil in a frypan/saucepan (I used solidified oil which is an animal fat that you find in the butter section at the supermarket), to 175 degrees.

    8. Drop in 3-4 balls at a time and cook for 5 mins or until nice and brown/golden. Mine turned over on their own in the oil, but you may need to turn them manually

    9. When cooked, take out and roll in sugar, then using a piping bag with the long nozzle (Or an old sauce bottle cleaned out and filled with jam), fill the donuts with jam

These taste Just like the donuts you get from the markets and fast food vans etc. Enjoy!

Tip

You can use any flavor jam you like, but raspberry is generally what they use for traditional hot jam donuts

Just made them. They were very easy to whip up and most where eaten two minutes after they came out of the hot oil. Next time I will try doing them in the oven as I am not a fan of using oil. Will be making again soon, maybe for dessert with ice-cream or custartd. Thanks for the recipe, will be printing for my collection.

I tried this today, it's a very good recipe. I would add more sugar though, but of course it depends on the taste and how sweet the jam is. Thank you for the recipe, it's really easy. What I'll do different next time is I'll double the ingredients tmrc_emoticons.)

Delicious! I chose to bake them in the oven and then brush them with melted butter, roll in sugar and then filled them with nutella and jam. I was hoping there would be enough for afternoon tea but my husband and 2 kids demolished them all at morning tea (I did manage to get 1).

    Submitted by mixing_liv on 6. November 2016 - 19:13.

Made these today and they were a huge hit! I hope they keep well for a morning tea at work I have tomorrow.  My dad is a massive jam donut fan and he said these were better than any shop bought donut! Found that pumping in the jam was easiest when it had been whizzed and heated for 1 min in thermie @ 57 deg first. Not sure how to get the sugar to stick well though, I used solidified oil and caster sugar and it didnt alway stick. Will make again for sure!

A little fiddly, but tasty! I had trouble piping jam (and custard, and nutella) into the donuts, but that was due to using a plastic bag rather than a stiffer piping tool. Light, fluffy, and delicious.

    Submitted by kkap on 15. September 2015 - 13:01.

I made a double batch and although they ended up being a bit time consuming, they weren't hard at all to make and the end result was AMAZING! I made half with jam and half with softened Nutella and the feedback for preferred way was mixed, although all taste testers agreed both ways were absolutely delicious. I didn't use solidified oil, just regular canola which was fine, although since I'll definitely be making these again, I might try solidified oil next time. Oh and we kept two donuts for the next morning, but they had gone quite hard, so definitely best eaten on the day of making (trust me, that's not hard to do). Thank you so much for this fabulous recipe!

how much oil do you put in the frying pan - I'm using copha?  is that ok

I use 1-1.5 blocks of solidified oil (I think they come in 500g blocks) which is animal fat and is found in the fridge section at the supermarket (near all the butters & copha) Copha is basically solidified coconut oil so im sure it would also work but may give it a slightly different flavour
