200g sugar, doubled the cornflour and vinegar. Added a leftover cucumber and capsicum. Omitted the curry powder and used mustard seed instead of powder. Also added 3tbsp tomato paste some coriander seed and black pepper.

This produced a lovely 'pure tomato' kind of relish. Still a bit on the sweet side, will decrease sugar by another 50g and add one more tbsp vinegar.

I make this quite regularly - delicious. I try to reduce the sugar quite a bit, but the relish generally doesn't last for as long.

  • I had just started cooking

    Submitted by Renee_B on 1. October 2016 - 11:52.

I had just started cooking this when I read all the comments.... A few 4 letter words were used once I read them all tmrc_emoticons.p

Somehow I managed to save it by- Adding 3 pinches of Vegeta Original, doubling the cornflour, adding a touch more curry powder. I also removed the MC and used the simmering basket instead.

I will be very interested in seeing how it keeps. Fingers crossed

    Submitted by Lindart48 on 20. November 2015 - 11:26.

This recipe has a serious problem. Definitly not enough vinegar. 4 batches need to be binned. I believe the sugar without enough acid is fermenting in the jars. Very disappointed.  Will try another recipe in  future.

Reduce the liquid and use more "solids". Firm tomatoes, onion etc.

    Submitted by Nazz on 10. November 2014 - 13:14.

Hi there,  I think it could have something to do with the low amounts of vinegar and salt for that ratio of sugar.  Also are you sterilising the lids as well as the jars ?  I made that mistake once !  And make sure you are sterilising your jars in boiling water for at least 10 minutes.

  • I have made this receipe 4

Submitted by Suzie King on 4. April 2014 - 16:22.

I have made this receipe 4 times now and each time I have had mould grow on top of and underneath the lid of the relish. I have steralized the jars, they were hot when I put the hot relish in them and they have been filled to the top, I've covered them with the plastic and rubber bands.

Can anyway give me some advise

  • Yummmm! Turned out great -

    Submitted by lonehemel on 6. March 2014 - 14:22.

Yummmm! Turned out great - thankfully I read the comments first so only did 160gms raw sugar and it's plenty sweet enough. I needed to add some more tapioca flour (2 heaped tablespoons) to thicken at the end though plus next time I won't mush the onions & tomatoes quite as much so it's a bit chunkier.

    Thanks

    Submitted by Cobie on 25. February 2013 - 16:29.

I made this beautiful relish last night. Glad I read all the comments as I also halved the sugar and doubled the cornflour. I also added a couple of my home grown tiny red hot chillies to the mix to give it a little zing. Thankyou for a lovely and easy recipe. why would you buy another jar of relish again when its soooo easy to make in the Thermomix and taste ten times better. tmrc_emoticons.)

    Submitted by Catherine_Mum on 24. January 2013 - 10:08.

I have made this lovely recepit as a 1/2 batch, with only 80g of sugar and it is to die for - I love it on bread, sandwich, eggs, salad and pretty much anything you would put tomato's with.  Healthy and yummy - thank you

  • So, does it still keep when

    Submitted by Sue45 on 2. January 2013 - 11:02.

So, does it still keep when it has less sugar? The sugar is what preserves the food, and should also thicken it. Cornflower will thicken, but not preserve.

  • Just made this - it's far too

    Submitted by yesplease72 on 28. July 2012 - 10:46.

Just made this - it's far too sweet for me. I'll make it again as I think it's a good base, but I'll halve the amount of sugar (which I admit I did question the amount as I was getting it ready, but figured I should simply follow the recipe!).

    Proceed with caution!
