Recipe's preparation

  1. Method

Mix water, sugar, salt, oil and yeast for 5 seconds on speed 7 to combine.

Add the flour.  Mix for 6 seconds on speed 7 to combine.

Set dial to closed lid position.

Knead the dough for 2 minutes on interval speed.

Cut the dough into 8 equal sized balls; let rest for 10 – 20 minutes.

    Preheat your oven to 220 o C.

Roll each piece into a rope 10-15 cms long.  Form into a circle, overlapping ends by 1-2 cms, and pinch firmly to seal.  Roll these two ends together.  (Put your hand through the “ring”, the sealed ends should be under your palm, and then roll the end until it is completely fused)

Let bagel rings rest 20 mins.

Bring pot of water to boil 2-3 inches deep and cover baking tray with oven proof baking paper.

Bagels will start to look puffy; it’s now time to boil.  Boil each bagel for about a minute, turn over and boil another minute.

Take them out and let dry for a minute and then place them on your baking tray.

Sprinkle with sesame seeds or poppy seeds.

Bake at 220 °C, after 10 minutes; flip the bagels over and bake for another 10 minutes.

  • This recipe has way too much

This recipe has way too much yeast, making the bagels very difficult to work with.

These are amazing!!! I used half spelt half wholemeal flour and still worked out great. I also steamed them in the Varoma then put in the oven (I can never follow a recipe properly!) but still worked out amazing. My husband's response was pretty awesome too tmrc_emoticons.)

  • Looking forward to trying

    Submitted by kristie0910 on 2. June 2012 - 13:50.

Looking forward to trying these bagels in the Thermomix - just got mine!

I like putting a tablespoon of sugar in my boiling water - gives a glossy finish when they are baked.

I have also found that punching a hole through each ball of dough works (like a doughnut), i could never get my ends to stick together!

  • HI Jayne, Have you had bagels

    Submitted by kristie0910 on 2. June 2012 - 13:48.

HI Jayne, Have you had bagels before -  because they are meant to be much heavier and denser than rolls are?

You could also make sure your yeast is fresh?

    Submitted by Jaynebowen on 12. April 2012 - 21:28.

I have made these twice now, and both times they've come out heavy and quite dense. Any suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong?
