Grandma's Tomato Relish

  • 12 Lge ripe tomatoes
  • 3 medium brown onions
  • 125 grams sugar
  • 1 tbsp curry powder
  • 1/2 teaspoons cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 tbsp mustard
  • 3 heaped tablespoons flour
  • 1 bottles Brown Vinegar
  • 2 heaped teaspoons fine cooking salt

      For cooking (simmering) at temperatures of 95°C or above (200°F), the simmering basket should always be used instead of the TM6 measuring cup, as the TM6 measuring cup fits tightly in the lid. The simmering basket rests loosely on top, is steam-permeable, and also prevents food spatter from the mixing bowl.

      If you are using a Thermomix® TM6 measuring cup with your Thermomix® TM5:

Recipe's preparation

    Peel tomatoes
  1. Using sharp knife, make shallow cross in tomato skin. Pour boiling water over tomatoes and leave until skins loosen.

    Peel and quarter tomatoes, remove core.

    Add chopped onion to tomatoes in a large bowl, sprinkle with salt. Leave to stand covered for several hours or overnight, stirring occasionally.
  2. Peel and quarter onions.
    Place onions in bowl,
    Chop 6 seconds/speed 4.
  3. Drain liquid off tomatoes.
    Place tomatoes into Thermomix bowl with chopped onion.
    Cover with vinegar.
  4. Place steaming basket on lid.
    Bring to boil 5 minutes/100 degrees/reverse/stir.
    While boiling, add remaining ingredients mixed with a little vinegar.
    Cook for a further 30 mins/varoma/reverse/stir.
  5. Pour into sterilised jars.
    Seal filled jars once cooled and store in refrigerator.

Tip

Place tomatoes in Varoma, 7-8 minutes/Varoma/stir. Remove tomatoes from varoma, remove skins.

Makes 4 mid size jars. Store in fridge.
